The Columbia supplement consists of several lists and three short answer questions.à à For the quick questions about your interests, which ask you to list books, concerts, media that you have enjoyed over the past year, provide straightforward responses.à As an academically engaged student, there should be plenty of media and arts that have captured your attention.à Share both the mundane and the more interesting.à If you have a strong interest in a subject area, chances are your reading interests at least peripherally relate.à The Core Curriculum at Columbia includes humanities courses that focus on music and art in addition to literature, and the question about performances or exhibits dovetails with this component of the curriculum. These courses also take advantage of the rich opportunities available to students in New York City. The integration of a strong campus center (the vast majority of students live on campus for four years) with the accessibility of the city and its commitment to a core curriculum, make Columbia a college with its own mission.à There are many facets to Columbia that make it distinctive, and therefore, your short answer about your interest in Columbia should be specific and well connected to your interests and its strengths.à If you feel that you need more information about Columbia, check the website for more information about their fall evening programs in cities around the United States. The motifs from ââ¬ËThe Jet Songââ¬â¢ can be seen in bar 32 of the blues which is typical of jazz music and elements from ââ¬ËAmericaââ¬â¢ are placed into the mambo which is percussive and typical of Latin-American music. The constant use of these motifs represents each gang and their characters by using characteristics of the music from their own country. The last method Bernstein uses to create tension between the gangs is the use of asymmetrical rhythms with pauses over rests which is unnerving to the audience. This can be seen in the opening of ââ¬ËThe Jet Songââ¬â¢ when the chords are placed in unexpected places from the start of the song. Figure 3: Asymmetrical rhythms and unexpected pauses create tension. (2000: 13) Bernstein and Sondheim use the score and lyrics to depict individual characters using traditional music and speaking styles from their individual cultures, which can clearly be seen throughout the musical. In the ââ¬ËJet Songââ¬â¢, the unsteady chords from the opening of the prologue and the Jetsââ¬â¢ leitmotif are used frequently to once again show the audience unity between the gang members.
